PARENTS AS TEACHERS

Being a parent is hard work.

In the first few years, children learn more and at a faster pace than at any other time in life. You help shape your child's future through the kinds of experiences you provide. Your baby was born to learn, and as a parent, you are your child's first and most important teacher.

Parents as Teachers is here to help you!

Parents as Teachers (PAT) is a parent education and family support program serving families throughout pregnancy until their child enters kindergarten, usually age 5.

Parents are supported by PAT-certified parent educators trained to translate scientific information on early brain development into specific when, what, how and why advice for families. By understanding what to expect during each stage of development, parents can easily capture the teachable moments in everyday life to enhance their child's language development, intellectual growth, social development and motor skills.

As a PAT family, you receive:

  • Personal visits -- during which your parent educator will share age-appropriate child development and parenting information, help you learn to observe your child, and address your parenting concerns.
  • Parent group meetings -- which are opportunities to share information about parenting issues and child development. Parents learn and support each other, observe their children with other children and practice parenting skills.
  • Screenings -- to assess your child's overall development as well as health, hearing and vision.
  • Resource network -- that links your family to other community services.

STAYING CONNECTED WITH YOUR TEEN®- S.C.T.

Because parents matter, and so do their teens!
S.C.T is for parents of teens ages 12-17

(Formerly known as the Parents Who Care® program)

Dickinson Mental Health Center Offers Channing-Bete- Staying Connected with Your Teen program, a proven-effective, science-based series of video- and workshop-based modules that get parents and teens working together to enhance communication and family management practices and decrease conflict.

S.C.T. Program FAQs

What is the Staying Connected with Your Teen program?

The Staying Connected with Your Teen program teaches parents and teens the skills they need to improve family communication and family bonding. It draws on extensive research that demonstrates the critical importance of parent involvement in reducing or inhibiting adolescent participation in antisocial behaviors.

Who developed the Staying Connected with Your Teen program?

The Staying Connected with Your Teen program was developed by J. David Hawkins, Ph.D., and Richard F. Catalano, Ph.D., professors of social work and directors of the Social Development Research Group at the University of Washington. Dr. Hawkins and Dr. Catalano, pioneers in the field of prevention research and developers of the Social Development Theory, are internationally known for their groundbreaking work in the area of risk and protective factors.

How do we know the Staying Connected with Your Teen program works?

In a controlled study of the Staying Connected with Your Teen program (formerly known as Parents Who Care), participant families showed statistically significant improvement in these four areas considered critical in preventing substance abuse and other problem behaviors among teens: improved family discipline practices, improved family supervision skills, improved family bonding, and reduced family attitudes favorable to antisocial behavior.

How long is the Staying Connected with Your Teen program and how is it structured?

The Staying Connected with Your Teen program can be implemented as a formal parenting workshop in five 2-hour sessions, or as a 7-unit self-paced home-study program. The workshop option allows parents to network and discuss parenting strategies with one another. The home-study option helps you avoid potential recruitment and logistical issues -- parents and teens complete the activities in the book and video at home, and you simply call them or schedule follow-up meetings at school.
