HISTORY of Elkwood Arts

Elkwood Arts, a program of Dickinson Mental Health Center and partially funded by CE MH/MR Program, was started in 1994 when searching for a way to meet the needs of disabled adults interested in woodworking.

Elkwood Arts is a licensed vocational facility providing sheltered employment and training to disabled adults, producing quality, hand made furniture and products made entirely from hardwoods grown and harvested in the Pennsylvania Wilds and donated by area lumber mills. Elkwood Arts is located in Pennsylvania wilds region that was establish by governor Ed Rendell. Most of our wood is donated from local lumber mills from the Pennsylvania Certified Forest.

It is also a teaching ground in which more generalized work skills will be taught allowing those interested and capable to move on into competitive employment.

Each of our products is sanded to a smooth finish, inspected by our floor supervisor before going to our professional woodworkers/cabinet makers. We are very proud to say that each of these are professionals, with over 50 years combined experience.

Recently, through grant money, Elkwood Arts has acquired a laser engraver. This will open the doors to endless opportunities for all that work in our wood shop. We are located in historic Ridgway, PA. 324 Allenhurst Ave. directly behind BiLo foods.

HISTORY of
    Dickinson Mental Health Center

Until the Ridgway Area Psychiatric Center opened its doors in 1958 under the direction and leadership of its founder, Dr. Robert J. Dickinson, there was virtually no outpatient psychiatric care available in rural Pennsylvania. Originally the "Center" had a single purpose of outpatient clinical assessment and treatment of psychiatric disorders. While the Center has reduced its service area from six counties to primarily three (Elk, Cameron and Potter), with some programmatic extensions to McKean County, it has greatly expanded the number of programs offered.

Today the Center has grown from a single service program to a complex administrative organization of more than two dozen units and licensed programs, serving those individuals with mental health as well as mental retardation related needs.

The Center was renamed from the original Ridgway Area Psychiatric Center to Dickinson Mental Health Center in 1982, by the Board of Governors, in honor and memory of its founder, Dr. Robert J. Dickinson.
